The International Observatory on Language Rights

The International Observatory on Language Rights aims, on the one hand, to promote the vitality of minority language communities in Canada by urging these communities to take part in the development of their rights and, on the other hand, to acquaint other countries with the Canadian experience by sharing with them how Canada has dealt with its official languages problems. Conversely, the Observatory hopes to help Canadians gain better insight into the linguistic situation in other countries, thereby providing an opportunity to learn from their experience, and offering different problem-solving avenues.

Appeal from a decision of the Court of Queen's Bench dated January 10, 2022. The Association des juristes d'expression française du Nouveau-Brunswick (AJEFNB) is asking the Court of Appeal for a declaratory judgment concerning the powers of the Province of New Brunswick and the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages of New Brunswick with respect to the process for appointing a new Commissioner of Official Languages. Ultimately, the New Brunswick Court of Appeal ruled that the judgment sought by AJEFNB was a theoretical remedy, since the appointment of the new Commissioner was not itself contested.
