The International Observatory on Language Rights

The International Observatory on Language Rights aims, on the one hand, to promote the vitality of minority language communities in Canada by urging these communities to take part in the development of their rights and, on the other hand, to acquaint other countries with the Canadian experience by sharing with them how Canada has dealt with its official languages problems. Conversely, the Observatory hopes to help Canadians gain better insight into the linguistic situation in other countries, thereby providing an opportunity to learn from their experience, and offering different problem-solving avenues.
Au cours de la journée, nous avons entendu des personnes de différents milieux. Il fallait s’y attendre, parce que la carrière de Michel Doucet l’a amené, pendant plus de 30 ans, à travailler avec des étudiants, des juristes, des administrateurs universitaires, des professeurs de droit et d’autres sciences sociales, des militants du mouvement nationaliste, des représentants d’associations professionnelles, des politiciens et des fonctionnaires. Il a travaillé principalement au Nouveau-Brunswick, mais il a aussi participé à de nombreux projets à l’échelle nationale et a occupé un poste en France dans les bureaux de l’Organisation internationale de la Francophonie. Ces personnes ont voulu expliquer la façon dont Michel a contribué à réaliser ses propres objectifs, lesquels coïncidaient avec les leurs. Il fallait préserver ces témoignages.
